Talk by Dr. Karen Schwean-Lardner - Lighting for turkeys - changes in production and welfare
Karen Schwean-Lardner completed her PhD in poultry management and welfare from the University of Saskatchewan, studying the impact of lighting programs on broiler welfare and production. This work was conducted in conjunction with Aviagen Broilers, and Aviagen’s lighting program recommendations for broilers internationally are based on these works. She has continued a strong research portfolio in the area of both turkey and broiler lighting programs, with emphasis on both welfare and productivity. Karen maintains a strong extension portfolio and has given over 150 invited international scientific or industry presentations since joining the University of Saskatchewan Canada faculty 10 years ago. She also serves on numerous welfare advisory committees for both turkey and broiler groups internationally.

Dr. Gabrielle House is an Animal Lighting Application Specialist for ONCE by Signify. In her role, Gabrielle supports new product development as a customer-facing liaison between Biological R&D, Sales, and Marketing to enhance food animal welfare and performance across North and South America. Prior to joining ONCE, Gabrielle received her B.S. in Animal Sciences from Purdue University, and her Ph.D. in Poultry Science from Texas A&M University. At home in Indiana, she enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and practicing yoga.

Following his graduation he worked at UC Davis studying the impact of lighting programs on broiler welfare and production. He has continued a strong research portfolio in the area layer, broiler, and duck lighting programs, with emphasis on both welfare and productivity. Greg maintains a strong extension portfolio and has given over 150 invited international scientific or industry presentations since joining the Texas A&M University Poultry Science faculty 12 years ago. He has published over 80 peer reviewed publications and over 200 abstracts.

Laura has been researching poultry welfare for over 20 years. Her current research is mainly collaborations with broiler breeding companies on welfare assessments of slower growing broilers. Laura is also the program director of the International Animal Welfare, Ethics and Law MSc which is run jointly with the University of Edinburgh, and supervises students worldwide on a range of topics and species. Outside of poultry, Laura is interested in housing and management of shelter dogs and ways to support behavioral rehabilitation of rescue dogs.

Kelsey Bayliff is an animal scientist and the Science and Standards Coordinator with the American Humane Certified Farm Program. Her work is focused on using science-based evidence to build on-farm animal welfare assessments for farm animals. She works closely with the poultry industry and academic experts for continuous improvement of animal welfare standards.

Dr Guro Vasdal is an ethologist and project leader at Animalia – the Norwegian Meat and poultry research Centre in Oslo.
